Mattel Gets Into Gear with Audi for a Brick-Building Burnout

Mattel is putting its foot firmly on the gas with the latest release from its Mattel Brick Shop™ line, teaming up with Hot Wheels®—still the undisputed king of global toy sales—and the legendary engineering minds at Audi's quattro GmbH and Auto Union GmbH. The result? Two buildable icons: the Audi Avant RS2 and the Audi R8 LMS, rendered in striking detail at 1:32 and 1:16 scale, respectively.
This is more than a nostalgic toy drop—it's an automotive love letter, brick by brick. Whether you're an RS2 purist with a penchant for turbocharged ‘90s wagons or a track junkie who dreams in GT3 spec, these sets are engineered for gearheads who prefer their collectibles with torque specs.
According to Ted Wu, Mattel’s Global Head of Vehicles and Building Sets (aka the man driving this beautifully over-engineered bus), the partnership represents a full-circle moment—Hot Wheels first cast an Audi in 1993, and now they’re literally letting fans build the legends.
The RS2 kit ($19.99) gives you opening everything—doors, glass, and even the roof—with authentic Toyo tires and decals that let you fine-tune your tribute to the turbocharged sleeper. The R8 LMS kit ($49.99), on the other hand, is an ode to Audi's endurance racing dominance, featuring a functional steering wheel and interchangeable aero parts that nod to its Nürburgring pedigree.
Available now for pre-sale globally via Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Mattel Creations. Hitting shelves this fall. If you’re in El Segundo on October 4th, swing by the Hot Wheels Legends Tour for a first look that’s more pit lane than playroom.
